Lucas Oil Stadium
Currently under construction in Indianapolis is the Lucas Oil Stadium. The sports facility is scheduled to open in the fall of 2008 and will replace the RCA Dome. The RCA Dome was opened in 1983 and is attached to the Indianapolis Convention Center. The Dome has been the home of the Indianapolis Colts football team for many years but the Lucas Oil Stadium will now be there new home. There are also plans for a high rise hotel to be built here too.
The stadium will have great features like a retractable roof and window wall, which will allow the Colts to play outside. The window wall will allow extra light into the stadium when it’s closed. Aside from hosting the Colts, the stadium will be able to hold other types of events. This feature was included in the design so that the building could be put to more use. Because of this more revenue can be earned. Some of the other planned events that will take place here are the final rounds of the Men’s Final Four in 2010, and the Women’s Final Four in 2011, the Bands of America Grand National Championships, and the city of Indianapolis has even put a bid in to host the 2011 Super Bowl.
In February 2006, it was announced that the naming rights to the stadium were purchased by Lucas Oil for $120 million. Before this the building was referred to as the Indiana Stadium. It’s expected to cost $675 million to build the Lucas Oil Stadium. The stadium is being financed by funds raised by the State of Indiana and the City of Indianapolis. The Indianapolis Colts will also give $100 million toward its construction.
